Urgent Care Medical Director

Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Chair, Department of Emergency Medicine, the Medical Director, South Shore Health Express, is a clinical and operationally excellent physician-leader board-certified in emergency medicine. The Medical Director functions as South Shore Health Express’ clinical leader and ensures that the mission and core values of the organization are upheld. In collaboration with the VP, Operations Health Express, the Medical Director provides guidance, leadership, and oversight to the clinical staff, supervises clinical colleagues, coordinates quality and compliance tasks while taking an active role in Health System priorities. The medical director works collaboratively with human resource colleagues to recruit, hire and retain staff with a focus to clinical excellence. A combined leadership and clinical role, the Medical Director provides high-quality, patient-focused urgent care health care services to all patients, in collaboration with the other staff members, to ensure that the individually planned needs and desires of patients are met, regardless of age or sex, on a continuing basis by performing the duties outlined below. The Medical Director abides by the standards and laws governing the practice of medicine as established by individual state law. The role demands a flexible work schedule, including the necessity for early and late meetings, attendance at meetings both within and outside the health system and the ability to meet frequent deadlines. Some evening and weekend work may also be required to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.

Job Description

Leadership

  • The Medical Director provides guidance, leadership, and oversight to the staff and will be responsible for the clinical staff, including staffing models, medical staff hiring, orientation, scheduling, and ongoing training and company educational programs.
  • The Medical Director will assist in the creation and implementation of clinical and administrative policies and procedures.
  • The Medical Director actively participates in and oversees the Quality Assurance, Compliance and Utilization Review Programs.
  • The Medical Director maintains appropriate clinical standards and follows the guidelines established by the organization’s Policy and Procedure Manuals.
  • The Medical Director leads department quality improvement activities, staff educational programs, departmental meetings, and demonstrates and maintains clinical competency in the delivery of patient care services in accordance with company guidelines.
  • The Medical Director will manage other duties as may be assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities   

  • The Medical Director maintains supervisory duties over staff as required; is responsible for the supervision, control, and direction of the physician assistant, nurse practitioner (including students on clinical rotation), nurse, nurse technician, medical assistant, phlebotomist, and radiology technicians; and retains responsibility to the patient for the staff’s competence and performance
  • In partnership with the VP, Operations, the Medical Director provides guidance to the facility managers in regards to all other clinical operations.
  • Collaborate with Vice President of Urgent Care for performance improvement initiatives, present data and trends across the system, and strive to enhance volume, utilization, and performance year over year
  • Foster a culture of collaboration and health among the urgent care clinical staff, ensuring strong interdepartmental relationships within the hospital, across related departments, and throughout the South Shore Health system.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures that align with the health system's overarching policies and philosophy. This includes assessing the clinical and financial needs of the Urgent Care service line and adapting policies and procedures to meet evolving requirements.
    • This involves evaluating, initiating, and revising various systems and procedures to maximize operational efficiency and address clinical challenges impacting service line operations or employee well-being.
    • The Medical Director will collaborate with management staff and representatives from other departments to evaluate and implement systems and procedures, aiming for continuous improvement and efficiency across Urgent Care.
  • Establish effective, clear, and precise communication channels ensuring regular and transparent communication

Quality & Compliance

  • Works in concert with the Chair, Emergency Medicine, SVP for Quality and Safety and VP of Urgent Care to maintain the highest of quality and safety standards set forth by SSH’s focus on “Just culture” and “high reliability organization” (HRO) principles
  • In collaboration with interdisciplinary hospital, physician, and nursing leaders, directs the development and implementation of process improvement initiatives aimed at improving patient safety and compliance across the continuum of care.
  • Assures compliance with SSH, OSHA, DPH, and state and federal regulations across the service-line.
  • Partners with the appropriate compliance offices for audits as needed and/or directed.

Professional Billing Oversight

  • Partner with Provider Enrollment to ensure compliance with all policies related to credentialing and enrollment
  • Analyze and resolve any professional billing reimbursement issues on a timely basis

System Engagement

  • Partners with the Vice President to align the system goals and ongoing network developments with the capacity and functional needs of the Urgent Care services to meet these goals.
  • Supports implementation of active asset management across the system. As a role model and teacher to others, actively participant in deliberating where care is delivered, supporting the development of predictive capabilities, and determined the associated resource needs.
  • As a part of South Shore Health initiatives, leads standardization efforts aimed at cost savings, efficiency and best practices for patient care.

Human Resources Management

  • Management Actions
  • Coordinates with Human Resources for the interviewing, hiring, personnel transactions (hiring, salaries, promotions, job descriptions, etc.) and implementing of institutional corrective action policy for staff.
  • Using Workday, initiates, approves, and coordinates with Human Resources for approval of human resources changes (i.e. salary adjustments, salary distributions, training records, etc.) for staff who reside under the Medical Director’s team.
  • Prepares performance reviews on direct reports.
  • Takes corrective and disciplinary action, up to and including termination, as necessary to maintain the highest level of staff productivity and effectiveness.
  • Oversight
  • Provides direct supervision to, and is responsible for, the conduct, operations, and results of the clinical staff.
  • Develops and implements change management programs including efficiency and resource utilization projects.
  • In times of transition, supports areas that require interim leadership support.
  • Development
  • Actively considers opportunities to grow the abilities, skills, and support of employees within Urgent Care through professional development, enhanced communication vehicles, employee-focused initiatives, and otherwise.
  • Culture/Equity
  • Reviews, supports, and ensures salary and wage equity for staff.
  • Creates a supportive, educational, and development-focused environment for all staff.
  • Ensures the support and maintenance of a diverse, inclusive, and professional environment for all staff.
  • Compliance
  • Develops, implements, oversees, and approves departmental policies, procedures and systems and revises as necessary to maximize efficiency.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with regulatory bodies and educating and holding managers accountable for implementing policy and procedure changes.
  • Other
  • Oversee general clinical matters within Urgent Care Services.
  • Develop letters, presentations, announcements, and other communications.  All documents must be of the highest caliber of refinement and professionalism.
  • Lead or participate in special projects and perform other related tasks as requested or required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education - Required

Graduate of an accredited School of Medicine

Required Licenses

Board Certified Emergency Physician
