Senior Accountant

Job Description Summary

Under the direction of the Accounting Manager, the Senior Accountant is primarily responsible for the reporting and accounting functions for the Organization’s corporate entities, including preparing and uploading journal entries, account reconciliation and analysis.

Job Responsibilities:

Ensures accurate and timely preparation of the monthly financial packages

a. Prepares journal entries, reconciliations, and analysis on a monthly basis, with appropriate back up, nsuring accuracy and compliance with established accounting procedure and policies.

c. Reviews and analyzes all supporting schedules and tie-ins to reports. Explains variances to budget, activity and trends, and other comparative data as may be necessary.

d. Reviews financial reports for accuracy before close.

e. Maintains follow–up to ensure timely preparation of all reports that must be prepared within area of responsibility.

Ensures that an up–to–date procedure manual is developed and maintained

Develops policies and procedures for functional areas that have not been documented, and updates policies and procedures as may be dictated by organizational and accounting changes.

Preparation for year–end audits

a. Assists in attaining the departmental goal of zero audit adjustments.

b. Contributes to minimizing the management comments regarding significant control weakness.

c. Reviews all analysis and/or documentation prior to its dissemination to the Accounting Manager and to the auditors. Ensures that the information is neat, orderly and accurate. The information contains adequate back–up and source references. Information is completed and provided within specified deadlines.

d. Effort, expectations and reasonableness are evident in the participation of audit as judged and reviewed by the Accounting Manager.

All work is self-reviewed for reasonableness and with a complete understanding before being presented as complete to the Accounting Manager

a. Evidenced by analysis being done.

b. Ability to explain the work.

Evaluates procedures for the recording of financial transactions on a current basis to determine efficiency, methods of reducing time, and cost of the accounting operation.

Ensures that the monthly accounting cycle is completed accurately and within established deadlines:

a. Monthly financial statements.

b. Accounts analysis and reconciliations.

Demonstrates an in–depth knowledge of financial accounting and reporting systems

a. Recommends enhancements and streamline techniques for report writers, reconciliations, report preparation and journal entry preparation.

b. Understands the interface of various subsystems (A/R, A/P, F/A, M/M, P/R).

c. Ability to trace transactions from the general ledger to the actual detail input.

Demonstrates initiative and follow through

Assists in new system, process and procedure implementation, recommending streamline techniques and documentation enhancements to current policies and procedures

Maintains record retention and filing systems per organizational policies and procedures

Plans and coordinates special activities as may be required in the performance of functions or as may be dictated by procedures required for internal control purposes

Provides direction and support to assist staff in the resolution of issues

a. Consults, advises and answers routine questions to facilitate and direct staff in finding solutions to operational issues.

b. Takes corrective action when warranted and alerts management as may be required.

Ensures compliance with all human resource and organizational policies and procedures to assure quality services and promote positive relations

a. Consistently adheres to human resources and organizational policies and procedures.

b. Takes initiative in developing performance goals and objectives to promote productivity, proficiency and professional growth.

c. Is recognized as a positive role model.

Effectively communicates and interacts with other staff

a. Promotes regular, comprehensive and two–way pro-active communication.

Act as a mentor to the Accounting intern

a. Assists accounting team in identifying tasks that intern can work on that will help them develop

b. Provide guidance to intern in completion of tasks by answering questions and providing effective feedback

Promotes effective working relations and contributes effectively as part of a department/unit team in ensuring that the met. and organization’s strategic goals and objectives are met

a. Effectively participates in all staff meetings.

b. Supports the organization’s mission and policies and procedures, through attendance and participation in meetings or committees, as may be required.

c. Is conscientious, contributes to departmental effectiveness during peek and unusual workflow periods, and readily accepts assignments in meeting departmental requirements.

d. Trains other staff to be a back up on tasks

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Education: Bachelors in Accounting or other related finance fieldExperience:

Experience: Minimum 3 years’ experience with Accounting

Ability to detect and avoid errors in preparing and reviewing financial reports. Must be able to carry out defined policies and procedures

Must have the ability to work and communicate effectively with all levels of management and staff.

Due to confidential nature of information, must be of sound character and professional in demeanor.

Work Schedule:  8:30-5pm; Hybrid, 4 days in the office, more days from home can be granted based on performance.
