Director, Clinical Informatics

Job Description Summary

The Director of Nursing Informatics manages a team. The Director of Nursing Informatics works collaboratively with both the Information Technology leadership and the clinical community to provide nursing leadership in the evaluation and implementation of clinical IT projects, systems, and initiatives at both the department and the enterprise level. You will be responsible for all Clinical Informatics efforts for all South Shore Health locations.

Job Description

The Clinical Informatics Director, in collaboration with the Chief Medical Informatics Officer, develops, directs and mentors a clinical informatics team to design and optimize systems to manage, communicate and build consensus for programs and goals that support the needs of inter-disciplinary clinical teams and end-users.

Manages and prioritizes work based on defined organizational goals. Assists in developing and articulating a short-term strategic vision for areas of responsibility with clear expectations for team members

Partners with IT in the development and delivery of clinical information systems training programs for all clinical disciplines (i.e. physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, paramedics) Along with IS and Quality, leads the design, implementation, and maintenance of clinical applications.

Evaluates and assists with projects, systems, and initiatives at both the department and the enterprise level. Utilizes standard project planning methodologies and is knowledgeable in all present and planned applications installed or to be installed.

Displays expertise in clinical applications and develops specifications to support the design of new or modified clinical applications. Functions as a liaison between clinical staff and the information technology staff, maintaining the voice of the clinical user and health system in all project initiatives.

Serves as the link between the clinical staff (customer) requirements and IS capabilities.

Serves as a resource to the Senior Leadership. Utilizes both clinical and analytical skills in evaluating proposed projects and forming recommendations. Assures high quality execution of all approved projects.

Demonstrates familiarity with all current hospital information systems. Demonstrates comprehensive understanding of clinical information systems including, computerized prescriber order entry, medication safety systems, electronic health records, and the intersection of EHRs with various other information technology systems.

Provides management and oversight of people, processes and technology/products that comprehensively support each phase of the system life cycle to improve the delivery of healthcare.

Promotes solutions that address the business needs of clinicians with the goal of advancing evidenced based clinical practice.

Maintains proficiency and requisite certification to serve as subject matter expert in EHR implementation, workflow optimization to promote high quality and safe care delivery.

Works collaboratively with the CMIO to monitor department expenses to ensure alignment with defined budgetary parameters.

Coordinates with Human Resources for the interviewing, hiring, personnel transactions (hiring, salaries, promotions, job descriptions, etc.) and implementing of staff performance evaluations.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Education:
Master’s Degree in Nursing required. ANCC Nursing Informatics Certification Required                
Minimum Work Experience
Minimum of 10 years’ experience including nursing and Clinical IS Applications implementation and optimization (EPIC preferred)
Required Licenses / Registrations 
RN - Registered Nurse
Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in Massachusetts required.

Certifications:

RN Registered Nurse

Epic Certification required

ANCC Nursing Informatics Certification preferred  

Required additional Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Current and active clinical license

Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated commitment to upholding the mission, vision and values of organization while promoting a collaborative just culture and strong team function

Proven managerial/administrative /operational leadership competence

Ability to work cross-functionally and in a matrixed organizational structure
