ANESTHESIA TECHNICIAN per diem

Job Description Summary

Coordinates and manages activities related to Anesthesia Department. Maintains anesthesia machines and equipment. Sets up operating rooms with required anesthesia and physiologic monitoring equipment in preparation for anesthesia in surgical, cath lab, endo, radiology and obstetric suites. Removes and cleans equipment at end of procedures (if possible) and restocks anesthesia supplies for subsequent use. Anesthesia technicians are in integral part of the anesthesia team. Their role is to assist licensed anesthesia providers in the acquisition, preparation and application of the equipment and supplies required for the administration of anesthesia. He/she provides support in anesthesia for routine and complex surgical cases. They provide this service by preparing and maintaining patient monitoring devices and anesthesia delivery systems before, during and after anesthesia. Cross over to the Birthing Unit is required. Salary commensurate with experience ($19.00-$25.57)

Job Description

Essential Functions:

1 - 1.       Coordinates the needs of anesthesia team.  Assists with technical aspects of getting patients ready for a variety of anesthesia types (general or regional anesthesia).  Assists anesthesia provider (anesthesiologist/CRNA) with setup of a variety of anesthesia tasks. This include but are not limited to; intravenous and intra-arterial monitoring, Swan-Ganz, central line, RIC line, Trialysis catheters and other invasive/noninvasive monitoring catheters/devices. Verifies functioning and proper layout of anesthesia specific equipment and disposable products.

   a - Assist anesthesia providers in various settings including: operating room, interventional radiology, trauma room, birthing unit, endoscopy suites, MRI/CT scan, emergency department and code responses throughout the health system.

   b - Assist with set up and monitoring of invasive and non-invasive monitoring devices:

  • Sedline/BIS Monitors
  • GE Monitors
  • Noninvasive hemodynamic devices (FloTrac, Cheetah)
  • Adult IV line
  • Pediatric IV line
  • Invasive lines: Swan-Gans, CVP monitoring, RIC line, central line catheters, triasys catheters Intra-arterial catheters.

    c – Assist in maintaining proper functionality of anesthesia machine in operating room and birthing unit.

  • Assist in routine/daily anesthesia machine safety checks.
  • Assist in maintaining and changing oxygen calibration devices, ventilator bellows, flow sensory calibration, soda lime canisters and other anesthesia machine maintenance.
  • Assist in maintaining proper pipeline gas connections from wall to anesthesia machine (oxygen, nitrous, medical air).
  • Assist in maintaining emergency E-cylinders oxygen supply on anesthesia machines.
  • Assist in maintaining scavenging system for proper medical gas scavenging.
  • Assist in maintaining spare and travel anesthesia machine for use.
  • Assist in setup/turnover anesthesia machines between cases. 
  • Assist in setup for malignant hyperthermia precautions (MH) on designated patients

    d – Assist in setup and maintaining proper functionality of other anesthesia related equipment in operating room and birthing unit:

  • Video laryngoscopy devices (Glidescope, C-MAC, McGrath, Fiberoptic)
  • GE Ultrasound machine
  • Belmont rapid infuser
  • Anesthesia gas vaporizers

    e – Maintain proper par levels and stock of all anesthesia related carts/boxes in operating room and birthing unit:

  • Omnicell anesthesia stock drawers
  • Anesthesia machine drawers
  • Anesthesia stock cart and anesthesia stock section in central core
  • Difficult airway cart
  • Invasive line monitoring cart (Aline, Central Line)
  • Anesthesia block cart
  • Pediatric anesthesia carts
  • Offsite anesthesia carts
  • Anesthesia Airway box
  • Anesthesia Spinal cart

    f – Assist in setup, turn over and maintenance of anesthesia designated area

  • Wipe down all designated anesthesia equipment (anesthesia machine, omnicell, anesthesia monitors/cables) between cases.
  • Maintain/change used anesthesia specific suction between cases.
  • Maintain/change used anesthesia circuit between cases.
  • Replace used anesthesia equipment and stock as appropriate between cases.

2 - Orders, stocks, and sets up anesthesia equipment in all OR’s on a daily basis and between each case.  Cleans and sterilizes all anesthesia equipment when necessary.

3 - 1.      Represents Department of Anesthesia in interdepartmental matters when Anesthesia Coordinator is unavailable.

4 - Coordinates activities for maintaining anesthesia equipment.  Assists in maintaining equipment repair logs and develops an equipment database.

5 - Interfaces with other disciplines, such as anesthesia repair contractors, O.R. and OB staffs, Perioperative assistants, and anesthesiologists/CRNAs.

6 - Assists in capital equipment preparation in cooperation with the Anesthesia Coordinator and Chief of Anesthesia.

   a - ·    Participates in staff meetings as determined by Manager.

   b - ·    Utilizes automated system to communicate inter and intra departmentally, as appropriate.

   c - ·     Completes work assignments on time/readily accepts assignments as observed by Manager.

9 - Other clinical services as assigned: 

  • Maintain competency in istat certification.
  • Assist anesthesia provider during intubation/emergence and during emergencies
  • Work alongside biomedical engineers to troubleshoot anesthesia machines and ensure compliance during off shift hours.
  • Work with central supply to maintain equipment/stock par levels.
  • Work with central supply to deal with back order equipment/stock.
  • Participate in evaluation/clinical trials of new anesthesia products.
  • Attend all anesthesia stat calls, code 9, code 2 and trauma calls to help provide anesthesia support to anesthesia provider.
  • Assist/participate in difficult intubations in the operating room/offsite locations
  • Travel to offsite locations, IR, Cath Lab, and Birthing Unit and provide anesthesia support.


Minimum Work Experience
Prior work experience as an Anesthesia Technician preferred. Knowledge of anesthesia equipment preferable.

Must be able to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays.
