Job Description

1. Performs mammography exams; needle localization and biopsy films.
a. Reviews patient's prior images, if applicable, before exam.

b. Reviews request for pertinent information.

c. Introduces herself to the patient and explains the exam.

d. Reviews personal information sheet with patient and notes down any information she thinks will help the radiologist.

e. Marks scars and moles.

f. Performs the exam

g. Checks films to be sure they are of good quality, then releases patient.

h. Prepares case for interpretation to include all pertinent reports and pathology

i. Performs needle localization at the hospital, following needle localization policy and procedure. (If applicable)


2. Assists in care and maintenance of facilities, equipment and supplies.
a. Operates all equipment carefully, following all operational instructions and safety restrictions.

b. Reports any malfunctions immediately to supervisor.

c. Is familiar with all power shutoffs and locations of fire extinguishers, in case of fire.


3. Maintains exam rooms, patients' waiting room and work area in clean, orderly and safe condition.
a. Washes down machine after each use.

b. Replaces all equipment to properly assigned area so that no accidents occur.

c. Makes new markers when necessary and stocks rooms.

d. Keeps waiting rooms neat and organized.


4. Displays superior interpersonal skills with patients and peers.
a. Speaks with patients and peers patiently and courteously.

b. Recognizes when patients need encouragement, reassurance and caring.

c. Never indicates to patient her opinions regarding the diagnosis.

d. Refers any problems with patients or peers to supervisor.


5. Reports any hazardous conditions or equipment breakdown immediately to supervisor.
a. Reports, in writing, any machine malfunctions or building maintenance needs.

b. Reports, in writing, any department supply which needs replacement.

7. Safety Awareness – Fosters a “Culture of Safety” through personal ownership and commitment to a safe environment.
a. Prior to the start of any invasive procedures, a final verification to confirm the correct patient, procedure, site, and information is done.

b. Verifies patient according to policy prior to administration of care/procedures/medications.

c. Reviews order for appropriateness and accuracy.

d. Complies with the current CDC hand hygiene guidelines through proper handwashing , as observed by nurse manager and peers.

e. Consistently follows the South Shore Hospital policy to mark surgical sites.

f. Makes appropriate use of personal protective equipment at all times.

g. Adheres to respiratory etiquette guidelines.

h. Adheres to universal precautions.

i. Appropriately disposes of hazardous materials.

j. Adheres to electrical safety guidelines.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Non-essential functions are those tasks, duties and responsibilities that are not critical to the performance of the job. Following are non-essential functions of the job, along with the corresponding performance standards.

1. Follows established department and hospital policies and procedures regarding safety, quality assurance, environment and infection control.

4. Maintains professional affiliations as appropriate.

5. Participates on Hospital committees as appropriate.

7. Attends inservices and educational programs.


Minimum Education - Preferred
Graduate of an approved Radiology program.
Minimum Work Experience
One year general radiography experience preferred.
One year of current mammography experience preferred.

Required Licenses / Registrations - Requirement to practice a profession. Licenses are granted by a licensing board in accordance with state law. Example - Registered Nurse (RN)
RT - MA - Radiologic Technologist (Massachusetts)

Preferred (not required) Licenses / Registrations
ARRT (M) American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (M)

Must perform 200 mammograms over a 24 month period. Must maintain 24 CEU's over 24 months
