Director, Medical Staff Services/Credentialing

Job Description Summary

We are seeking a strategic, certified CPCS leader to direct Medical Staff Services at South Shore Health. This high impact role partners closely with the CMO to ensure regulatory compliance and effective medical staff governance. The Director serves as a subject matter expert in medical staff affairs and leads a high performing Medical Staff Office team. This position is primarily onsite with a hybrid option. The Director of Medical Staff Services oversees all Medical Staff and Allied Health Staff functions under rigorous regulatory standards, requiring continuous monitoring and risk mitigation. The role works collaboratively with departments across the organization and routinely interfaces with medical staff leadership, physicians, legal counsel, administrative teams, IS, regulatory agencies, and external healthcare entities.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities:

Leadership & Operations

  • Provide strategic leadership for Medical Staff Services, Provider Onboarding, CME, Medical Library, and GME.

  • Oversee credentialing operations for more than 1,400 medical staff members in compliance with state, federal, Joint Commission, and organizational requirements.

  • Develop and implement medical staff policies with medical and administrative leadership.

  • Direct departmental operations, ensuring workflow efficiency, regulatory compliance, and service excellence.

  • Lead orientation for approximately 200 physicians and APCs annually.

  • Participate in and support Bylaws, Credentials, and Medical Executive Committees.

Supervision & Team Development

  • Hire, train, develop, and evaluate departmental staff.

  • Establish clear goals aligned with organizational priorities and provide coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback.

  • Ensure effective coordination and handoffs across Medical Staff Affairs functions.

Process Improvement & Collaboration

  • Partner with internal departments (Provider Enrollment, HR Recruitment, Malpractice, CME, GME, and others) to identify issues, develop solutions, and streamline processes.

  • Lead or support integration projects, software implementations, and workflow improvements.

  • Oversee credentialing systems, ensuring data accuracy and report integrity.

  • Establish and monitor turnaround standards for key processes.

Provider Experience & Onboarding

  • Collaborate with site operations teams to ensure smooth onboarding of new providers, with a focus on improving retention.

  • Standardize onboarding processes and drive performance improvement initiatives.

Strategic Management & Budget Oversight

  • Develop departmental budgets in alignment with organizational goals.

  • Monitor work volume, customer feedback, and staffing needs, communicating key issues to executive leadership.

  • Maintain oversight of the Medical Staff Fund.

Job Requirements:


Education

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent experience

  • Experience

  • Healthcare operations experience with broad provider interaction

  • Leadership and organizational management experience

Certifications
CPMSM certification preferred, or CPCS actively working toward CPMSM
