South Shore Health System (SSHS) is seeking an experienced and patient-centered Colorectal Surgeon to join our growing surgical team. This is an outstanding opportunity to provide high-quality, comprehensive colorectal care within a supportive, multidisciplinary environment serving the South Shore region of Massachusetts. The successful candidate will manage a broad spectrum of colorectal conditions — from benign anorectal disease to complex colorectal malignancies — and will collaborate closely with gastroenterologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists to deliver coordinated, evidence-based care. The Colorectal surgeon answers to the Chief of Colorectal surgery.

The Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center at South Shore Health provides convenient world-leading cancer care programs to our southeastern Massachusetts communities.  Experts from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and South Shore Health provide services in the Cancer Center. This unique clinical collaboration among the three organizations makes it possible to offer many advanced cancer treatments including groundbreaking clinical trials—often without the inconvenience of driving into Boston.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care

  • Perform the full spectrum of colorectal surgical procedures including minimally invasive (laparoscopic and robotic), open, and transanal approaches.
  • Manage benign and malignant colorectal conditions including colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), diverticular disease, rectal prolapse, and anorectal disorders.
  • Conduct comprehensive surgical consultations, pre-operative planning, and post-operative care.
  • Perform colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy as clinically indicated.
  • Coordinate with medical and radiation oncology for neoadjuvant and adjuvant treatment planning for rectal and colon cancers.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary tumor board conferences and GI care team meetings.
  • Manage ostomy care in collaboration with wound, ostomy, and continence (WOC) nursing staff.

Program & Quality

  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, outcome tracking, and evidence-based protocol development.
  • Participate in American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) activities.
  • Support ongoing development of the colorectal surgery program, including volume growth and service line expansion.
  • Engage in clinical research and support participation in oncology and surgical trials where appropriate.
  • Supervise and mentor residents, medical students, and advanced practice providers.

Community & Education

  • Participate in community education and outreach related to colorectal cancer screening, prevention, and early detection.
  • Represent SSHS at professional conferences and contribute to peer-reviewed publications as applicable.

Qualifications & Requirements

Required

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited institution
  • Completion of an accredited general surgery residency program
  • Completion of an accredited colorectal surgery fellowship (ACGME-approved)
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible by the American Board of Surgery (ABS) and/or the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery (ABCRS)
  • Current, unrestricted Massachusetts medical license (or eligibility to obtain)
  • DEA registration and eligibility for hospital privileges at SSHS
  • Proficiency in minimally invasive colorectal surgery (laparoscopic and/or robotic)

Preferred

  • Experience with robotic colorectal surgery platforms (e.g., da Vinci)
  • Expertise in transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME) or transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS)
  • Prior involvement in multidisciplinary GI oncology or tumor board settings
  • Interest or track record in clinical research or academic collaboration
  • Experience with high-acuity colorectal cases including re-operative surgery and complex pelvic procedures
